Why I Stopped Blogging and Why I am Starting Again

Anyone who reads this blog has noticed that I haven’t posted anything in quite a while. I decided to step away from my blog for a while. After spending a lot of time thinking about what I want to do with this blog I have decided to return to blogging, at least for the time being.

Why I Stopped Blogging

This was a tough election cycle here in the U.S. There was a lot of emotion on both sides of this election. Beginning in early August, I started noticing that engagement and conversation had been replaced with enragement and snark. I don’t blog on politics at all, but it seemed like the emotion of the election began to seep into the rest of life. Anger became the filter for everything.

Most of my blogs are focused on how to better enjoy your career and your life. Making changes to improve your career or life requires honest self-reflection and openness to change. Pervasive negativity tends to get in the way of openness to change.

So, in September I checked out of Twitter and stopped blogging. I needed a break from the online environment and wanted to spend some time thinking about whether I still wanted to invest time into blogging.

Why I Am Blogging Again

I started to blog because I enjoy writing and wanted to share some of the thoughts I had about enjoying your career. However, blogging is a lot of work. I enjoy writing, but you have to commit a LOT of time to producing content. Over the past six months I have done some serious reflection on whether I want to keep investing the time. I have a lot of other demands on my time. Is the time I spend blogging worth it?

From a business perspective I think the answer is no. My blog has seldom generated business leads. So, generating income is not a good justification to keep blogging.

But, what I learned in the last six months is that I like blogging. In truth, I miss the outlet of writing. So, I am back blogging because I decided I like it. In short, I am doing it largely for me. I still get joy from writing. And that is reason enough for me to return to blogging.

What Is Going To Be Different

One thing that is going to be different going forward is that I won’t be scheduling my blog posts. For almost two years, I blogged two to three times a week, on a set schedule and that was difficult. Blogging multiple times a week created artificial pressure to keep to the schedule. Going forward I plan to blog more often but I will be writing and posting without a set schedule. Moving off of a set schedule is bad for building readership and marketing, but it allows the blog to better fit my schedule and the nature rhythm of my writing.

The content is going to continue to focus on professional development for lawyers. As I have in the past, I am going to continue to blog on articles and books I am reading. I love finding connections between the law and other parts of life.

There is still a lot of negative energy out there, but I decided that is not going to discourage me from enjoying blogging. Disagreement is healthy, and hopefully we can all move towards productive ways of engaging our disagreements.

Whether you’re a new reader or a returning reader, thank you for reading this blog. I always love to have your feedback so comment away on future posts.
